A handful of us are lucky enough to live in the Lowcountry and as hard as we try not to, sometimes we take for granted the beautiful scenery that's in our backyard, but then a stunning engagement session from Charleston wedding photographers, Aaron and Jillian Photography comes along and BOOM, you fall in love all over again.   It took place among the historic streets of Downtown Charleston and the combination of this adorable couple + the amazing, “frame-worthy” photography is almost too much to handle.  We love Anna's choice of attire.  Her bright green shirts perfectly complements her lovely locks and thos fabulous wedges...and Anna looks pretty dapper, too! Go ahead, get your swoon on for this Downtown Charleston engagement session.

Daniel Island Club {Mandy + Greg}

I went to the University of Georgia, so I've got a soft spot in my heart for the color red (actually, I'm obsessed.).  It's such a sassy color and, at times, it can be difficult to properly integrate into your wedding color palette, but I'll tell you what, Bride Mandy nailed it as she gave it a chic, Lowcountry flair!  Mandy looked STUNNING in a fitted mermaid gown, while her gals rocked fabulous, one-shoulder red dresses.  The couple wed on lawn of the Daniel Island Club before enjoying a lovely evening with family and friends.  Thanks to Bri McDaniel Photography for capturing this amazing Charleston wedding! charleston weddings, hilton head weddings, myrtle beach weddingscharleston weddings, hilton head weddings, myrtle beach weddingscharleston weddings, hilton head weddings, myrtle beach weddingscharleston weddings, hilton head weddings, myrtle beach weddingscharleston weddings, hilton head weddings, myrtle beach weddingscharleston weddings, hilton head weddings, myrtle beach weddingscharleston weddings, hilton head weddings, myrtle beach weddingscharleston weddings, hilton head weddings, myrtle beach weddingscharleston weddings, hilton head weddings, myrtle beach weddings

Priscilla Thomas Photography {Spotlight}

It’s about time we introduced you to our friend and Charleston wedding photographer, Priscilla, of Priscilla Thomas Photography.  Time and time again, Priscilla delivers beautiful imagery to Lowcountry brides but she always goes a step further to truly create a memorable experience for the Bride and Groom.  She says, “If you just want a pretty picture, then we may not be a fit. But if you want an experience, a visual story crafted with your unique moments, then let me grab my camera and we can see where the journey takes us…” Um, yes please!  We are so proud to have her as part of the A Lowcountry Wedding family and are excited to share her story with all of you today! Give a big ol’ welcome to Priscilla Thomas Photography

Tell us a little bit about yourself…and by a little, we mean a lot :)

  • I was born on a U.S. Air Force base in Keflavik, Iceland, to parents native to Mississippi and Louisiana. My early childhood was spent in Alamogordo, NM, before my family returned to some southern comfort in Charleston, SC.
  • Photography has been a part of my life since adolescence when I worked on the school newspaper and yearbook. During college, I contributed editorial op-ed pieces to The George Street Observer at the College of Charleston and continued to embrace photographic ventures. After college, I started freelancing in photography and writing in Charleston, SC.
  • My passion for photography, visual storytelling, and culture has also fueled a love of travel. Since my junior year in college, I’ve traveled to India, Turkey, Greece, Mexico, Germany, and Jordan.
  • I received a B.A. in Religious Studies from the College of Charleston. Recently, I completed the coursework for a M.A. in Visual Communication with a concentration in Photojournalism and cognate in Multimedia at one of the top programs in the nation at Ohio University.
  • When I’m not photographing, I enjoy reading, short story writing, and such guilty pleasure as This American Life, Samoa Girl Scout Cookies, and indie films.

Hometown...

My childhood was spent in two places. Alamogordo, NM and Charleston, SC.

College/Major...

College of Charleston/B.A. in Religious Studies

Ohio University/M.A. in Visual Communication with a concentration in Photojournalism (still have to defend a master's project...maybe in 2014?)

One crazy fun fact we wouldn't know about you...

I was born in Iceland...and still loathe snow nonetheless.

Give us a little background on how your business came to life...

The business definitely wasn't planned. After graduating from College of Charleston in 2007, I had originally planned to go abroad and teach English. But like a lot of things in life, the plan changed. Instead of traveling, I found myself working full time in an accounting office. Though I enjoyed my coworkers and was fortunate to have great bosses, that professional field just wasn't for me. I considered it cubicle servitude and couldn't imagine doing that for forty years. What eventually led me to photography was going back to my media roots. In high school, I had been on the yearbook and newspaper staffs. During college, I contributed a few op-ed pieces to the George Street Observer. So, I wanted to go back that field, but I wanted to give proper attention to the photos as well. Usually the photographs were just afterthoughts or something to go with the words. But I always love a great story, and a visual one can be more captivating than a 10,000 word novel. So, in 2008 I picked up a camera with a new purpose. It wasn't going to be a mere hobby anymore. I started seeing my mentor, Mikayla Mackaness, and photographing every chance I could. In 2010, I found myself moving to Athens, Ohio, to attend a graduate program in visual communication for photojournalism at Ohio University. And then last June, I moved back to Charleston. I honestly don't consider what I do a business. It's a service. It's a privilege. To be chosen to document a moment in someone's life, whether it's a wedding or just daily life, is an honor and a great responsibility that I do not take lightly. The business stuff just comes with making this a career, but the people I meet and telling visual stories is the reason I stay in this business.

What is the one tip you wish you could tell every bride?

I can only tell one?! I'm working on a welcome packet to tell them a lot of tips! I think one of the most important tips is to never forget what your wedding day is about - the love each of you have for one another. Planning a wedding can definitely be overwhelming. And I think in some ways social media has amplified that. Brides are inundated with wedding related information - example: Pinterest. So don't get too wrapped up in the burlap runners and coral stained ribbon. Plan a wedding that reflects your fiance and you and focus on enjoying your special day.

How can a bride come prepared to her first appointment with you?

The first appointment is really where we determine if we're a good fit. Out of all the wedding vendors, brides need to be most comfortable with their photographer. This is because the photographer is with you the majority of the day. If a bride isn't relaxed around the photographer then it will show in the images. So, the first purpose of the initial meeting is to get to know each other a little better. The other reason is to discuss what they're envisioning for wedding photography. I always like to discuss photo ideas for the wedding and I also make sure that the bride understands my style and aesthetic approach. It's up to the couple to decide if my style and personality is a fit for them. As for being prepared, I think the most difficult part for a bride is determining the style of photography she likes and being able to distinguish styles in wedding photographs. Looking at wedding photos and finding images she likes is a step in the right direction. However, often times it takes a consultation with a photographer to help a couple figure out which style best suits them and their wedding.

In three words, sum up your style...

Candid & stylized portraiture

Favorite wedding image you've ever snapped.

There's one per wedding. This would take too long to tell you about all of them. ;)

What blogs provide you daily inspiration to keep your creative juices flowing (non-wedding related)

Since I come from a photojournalism background, I often look at blogs in that field. New York Time's Lens Blog is excellent. Time's Lightbox. I also enjoy the Image Deconstructed which interviews photographers on how they captured a particular photograph. To hear the photographer's voice, which often times never accompanies the picture, offers greater insight in the photography process as well as what photographers internalize from the people they meet and the experiences they have when image making.

Tell us a little bit about yourself…and by a little, we mean a lot :)

I was born in New York and raised in Maryland, but my heart belongs to South Carolina.  After spending 6+ years in finance, I rediscovered this love for photography and decided to try and fulfill my dream of building my own business + finally doing something I absolutely love for a living.  And wow – 2 years into it, I can finally say I'm living the dream!  I started out specializing in pet photography, which is something I still do + love.  I've always had a special connection with pets, especially dogs, so that was a natural fit for me.  While volunteering at my local animal shelter in Baltimore, I met another photographer who specialized in weddings.  We became good friends through volunteering and so I asked her if I could tag along and help out with some of her weddings.  She said yes and I fell in love with it.  That was in the fall of 2011.  We moved to Charleston in January 2012 and I spent all of 2012 second shooting with some amazing photographers here in Charleston, learning the business + sharpening my technical skills.  After booking pretty much every weekend, I thought to myself "maybe I could do this full-time and quit my day job" (which I hated).  So I gave myself a deadline – by August 1, I would have a website up and I'd start marketing myself.  Well, as luck would have it, I was laid off from my full-time job on July 31 and so I was pushed into life as a full-time photographer.  But it was the best thing that ever happened to me.  Since then, I've been working hard to build my wedding photography business and it's been amazing.  I think back to my life a year ago and still can't believe how much has happened and how incredibly lucky I am to finally be doing something I absolutely love for a living.

I'm married to my best friend, Brian, and we have 3 dogs – two Golden Retrievers named Camden + Brady, and a small lab-pit bull mix named Beckham.  I love to read, travel + eat… but not necessarily in that order.  I love reality TV, Starbucks, and anything that sparkles.

Give us a little background on how your business came to life...

I've always loved photography.  I can remember using my parent's film Minolta when I was young and I just LOVED taking photos of anything… but especially of my pets.  When my parents got me my own camera one year for my birthday, I was in love.  I took a camera with me everywhere and I still have boxes of prints + albums from my childhood.  I just can't bear to get rid of them!  When I bought my first DSLR camera in 2010, something clicked.  I had always loved photography – capturing moments – but the DSLR allowed me to create art.  I loved that!!  So I dove into it, learning how to shoot manually and taking in as much information as possible.  I started my pet photography business in early 2011 and my wedding photography business in August 2012.  It's been an amazing couple of years!

What is the one tip you wish you could tell every bride?

When you're looking for a wedding photographer, make sure whoever you book makes you feel confident and comfortable.  Feeling at ease with your photographer will only enhance your images in the end.

How can a bride come prepared to her first appointment with you?

I love when my brides come to me with ideas.  Although I rely on my own creativity, it's always great when brides are vocal about what inspires them and what exactly they love about my work, so that I can focus on providing them with great images that they will be over-the-moon excited about.  I guess I really like brides who aren't afraid to speak up and let me know what they are really looking for when they hire me.  It helps ensure that we're both on the same page and that we are the right fit for each other.

What blogs provide you daily inspiration to keep your creative juices flowing (non-wedding related) ?

I follow a lot of designers on Facebook that keep me inspired – Promise Tangeman, Ravyn Stadick, Jennifer Olmstead.  Most of the blogs I read are wedding related or pet photography related.  I gain my inspiration from real life and things around me.  When I'm out and about, I'm constantly inspired by light, architecture, textures, colors + unique locations.  I am always on the look out and thinking of new things I could bring to my work.

The Makings of a Perfect Wedding Day {Rick Dean Photography}

We always love to have our favorite Charleston wedding vendors swing by to share their insight on a particular topic, and I'm thrilled to have the talented Rick Dean Photography joining us today!  Rick's experience as a professional photographer has given him an interesting viewpoint on accomplishing the perfect photographic wedding day...

.

The Makings of a Perfect Wedding Day

Observations from a Photographer’s Point of View

In the course of the 13+ years and hundreds of weddings that I have photographed, I have seen all sizes, types and styles of weddings, from the simple and understated to the elaborate and eye-popping.  They were all truly amazing events because they were the vision of the bride (and some grooms), something that has been dreamed of for years and years.  Fortunately for the clients that I have worked with, I have never witnessed a wedding disaster.  But, I have seen my share of “oops” that could have or did make for an anxious bride or at best, a lot of laughs!  So I write this post to share with you some of my observations, from the photographer’s point of view --the person that is on a constant state of alert, observing every moment of the event.  I will cover topics that have recurring themes:  professionalism, timing, and communication-- from the wedding planner, the hair stylist, and of course, the photographer.

charleston weddings

Observation #1:  Choosing the right photographer with the proper skills and experience is critically important.  Yes, I know this may sound a bit biased, but I think your photography is the most important aspect of your wedding.  Also biased, but, think about it:  you spend months, maybe longer, planning this most magical day of your life and at the end of the day when the music has stopped, the cake is eaten, and the last toast has been made, all you may have to help you remember your wedding day are your photographs.

charleston beach weddings

At every wedding I shoot, I hear horror stories from the guests who are attending the wedding about their wedding photography.  At a recent event, as I was packing up for the evening, a young woman walked up to me and said, “… (bride) is going to be so happy with her wedding pictures, I just know it.  You were everywhere you needed to be.  I could tell you covered every detail.  When I got married I hired a friend to do my photography because she said she knew what she was doing and promised to do a good job.  There are so many things that she missed, pictures of really important parts of our wedding day that were not captured.  She had no idea how to pose us for our portraits. I still cry when I look at my pictures.”  I recently heard of a wedding where the inexperienced photographer had to borrow a guest’s camera when her one and only camera stopped working during the ceremony.  Another guest told me about her “friend photographer” -- she showed up with just one camera and a small flash.  The camera was so basic it was not capable of shooting in dark rooms with low light so all of the reception pictures were dark, pixilated and out of focus.  While I am sure there are many good experiences that I do not hear about, but please consider this:  Uncle Bob, or your college roommate, or the husband of your sister’s best friend may sound like a great way to save some money, but there are several pitfalls to consider.  Will your friend or relative also be a guest at the wedding?  Will their focus be on you (the client) or on having a good time?  Do they have the knowledge to make you look your best?  Do they know how to use posing techniques that will make your pictures look “not posed”?  Do they have professional quality camera and lighting equipment to shoot a wedding that may be both indoors and out, from rooms that are very dark to being under the noon-day sun with severe shadows?  Most importantly, do they know what needs to be done when their equipment fails or how to work under very stressful conditions so they can capture those “once in a lifetime moments”?  These last two questions go hand in hand because equipment failures can happen to anyone, even a pro.  It is how your photographer handles the situation that sets a professional apart from a personal friend or family member.  My suggestion is to do your homework when evaluating potential photographers.  Hire an experienced professional and ask them how they would handle any or all of the situations I described.  Their answers will be the best way to gauge their competence and their ability to provide you the best pictures of your most important day.

charleston destination weddings

charleston wedding venues

Observation #2:  Developing a detailed and comprehensive timeline of events will make your day less stressful and your wedding support team more successful.   Your timeline should detail all of the various wedding day activities from beginning to end, chronologically throughout the day.  It should contain the name and contact information of all of your vendors.   You will want to make sure your timeline includes the start and end time and delivery and pick up times of all of your vendors.  Common scheduling mistakes include the actual time needed to lace up the wedding gown and ample time to travel from the ceremony to the reception venue. I have seen gowns that take only one minute to get into, and I have also seen those that take twenty-five minutes.  Your timeline should include having your photographer arrive two hours before the ceremony to ensure they have ample time to capture the important pre-wedding images you desire, including the bride’s “getting ready images” and any pre-ceremony group shots with the guys and the gals and other intimate moments before the ceremony.  Remember that 30 minutes before the ceremony, the groomsmen will be seating guests and your bridesmaids assisting you in those final preparations, so that may limit the photographic possibilities if you cut short when your photographer begins the day.  And remember, your exit is as important as your entrance so please detail your departure plans to make sure your photographer is still present to capture the end of your day.  It is important to include every detail imaginable in this very important planning tool and to distribute your timeline to all your vendors at least 10 days before your wedding day.  This way any scheduling issues or overlaps can be identified and remedied averting potential wedding day ‘disasters’.   And finally, you will want someone to be in charge of executing the timeline for you on your wedding day.  Timelines and their pitfalls are easily taken care of by hiring a professional planner/coordinator.  Which brings me to, ….

wedding blogs

rick dean photography

Observation #3:  Choose a professional wedding or event coordinator.  Whether you desire full service event planning/coordination or strictly “day of” coordination, using a professional, experienced wedding planner, is the best way to make sure your day is managed exactly how you imagined it.  Once again, please be careful if a family member or friend offers to manage the events of your day.  She may also be a guest at the wedding and if so, may find it difficult to coordinate your day and simultaneously, enjoy it with you.  Some clients also find their coordinator through their caterer or venue as a value-added part of their service.  I have seen this option create amazing weddings that are flawlessly executed but I’ve also witnessed the planner that has “flown the coop” once the cake has been cut.  If you choose the value-add approach, here are some things to consider:  Make sure that you have a dedicated person from the staff that will be with you from the beginning of your day to the moment you are driven away.  They should not be the person that gets pulled away to spearhead a food or venue crisis.  As your planner, she should take the issue to the person in charge (chef or building manager) so that she can get back to her other duties as the event coordinator, and most importantly, helping you.  Something as simple as not having enough staff on hand to open both of the church’s double doors as you start your walk down the aisle or moving your guests to your exit location when the “partying” is over, is the job of a good wedding planner.  A professional event coordinator will make sure every detail is managed – from the start of your day to your formal exit ensuring the end of your day is as important as the beginning.

Observation #4:  Communicate, communicate, and communicate.  This may sound simple but it is second only to your timeline.  Ask almost any wedding planner or photographer and they will agree that hair and make-up takes longer than is usually planned, especially when you have a large wedding party.  The key to success is communication.  When scheduling your stylist and make-up artist, in addition to telling them the start time of your ceremony, you also should communicate the exact time they must have everyone coiffed, beautiful and ready to go.  Just to be safe, you may want to add an extra half hour into this part of your timeline and communicate to your hair stylist and make-up artist how important staying on schedule is to the success of your day.

I started with photography and so I’ll end with photography.  Most of my weddings include a staff of three (a primary photographer, a second photographer and an assistant) for the critical portions of the day.  There are times when your photographer needs to be in two places at one time.  For example, a wedding with lots of reception details that must be shot before the event begins may overlap with the time needed to capture the bride’s “getting ready” images or the groom and groomsmen preparations at an off-site location.  And let’s not forget during the ceremony when your photographer’s ability to move around is limited by space or church rules. A “second shooter” covers other angles of moments that can not be repeated from the first kiss to the last dance, every moment is important and capturing them all will make for lasting memories.

Every bride wants her wedding day to be a reflection of her happiness and joy.  Choosing the right team of professionals is the first step to ensure this happens.  Her wedding support team will make sure her day is as wonderful as she imagines it to be, and will ensure the she and her new husband are able to enjoy their wedding day without worry.   From the ‘eye’ of the photographer, I hope that you found my observations informative and more importantly, useful as you plan your wedding day.

Creek Club at I'On wedding {Jenny + David}

Since it's Sunday Funday in the Lowcountry, we've decided to shower you with a few of our favorite Southern weddings.  This darling gem comes to us from Reese Moore Weddings and was shot at one of our favorite Charleston wedding venues, Creek Club at I'On.  Guests were welcomed to the reception by the cheerful sounds of The Plantation Singers and fresh, Carolina peaches in wicker and burlap baskets.  They sipped on specialty drinks in mason jars, engaged in a casual game of cornhole and dined on authentic, Lowcountry cuisine.  We're talking about a delicious dose of barbecue, mac and cheese and buttermilk cornbread!   They bid farewell to their guests in a classic sparkler exit before hopping in a boat to end the night! charleston wedding at the creek club at i'on via reese moore photographycharleston weddingsmyrtle beach weddingsmyrtle beach wedding vendorscharleston wedding blogshilton head wedding vendorshilton head weddingscharleston wedding vendorsmyrtle beach weddingsstriped wedding straws

Charleston Beach Wedding {Toni + Doc}

I hope everyone has enjoyed their time off!  I wanted to kick off this short work week with a charming beach wedding from Charleston wedding vendor, Priscilla Thomas Photography.  Toni and Doc met when Toni was a junior in high school and he was a freshman at USC. They were together throughout college but separated thereafter. In the 24 years that followed, they only saw each other once. But a few years ago they reconnected on Facebook and that led to a second chance to be together. Their wedding ceremony took place in the evening at Folly Beach by pier 1580. The family made a week long vacation out of the event by renting a beach house near the ceremony location. They opted for a simple, intimate wedding with close friends and family and classic blue details.

Maddison Rown + Bella Bridesmaid Event

Last week, the creative geniuses of Maddison Row and Bella Bridesmaid teamed up for 'The Art of the Dress' event and treated all of their guests to an evening of luxe bridal heaven.  The soiree took place at the gorgeous Rebekah Jacob Gallery and  the fabulous Dana Cubbage Photography was their to capture the crazy beauty.  Another one of our favorites, Charleston wedding vendors, Virgil Bunao, was there to man the photo booth!  Check out some of these ridiculous bridal creations.  If you find something that suits your fancy, check the designers below.  I mean, can somebody give me that mint bridesmaid gown!?!? Columbia Bridals {Katie}

One of our favorite Charleston wedding vendors (and member of the A Lowcountry Wedding fam!), Dana Cubbage Photography, shot Katie's chic, Southern Bridal session alongside Callan Tinsley Photography.  It took place just up the road in Columbia at the Old Bull Street Mental Hospital...and it is fab!  The abandoned space makes for a stunning backdrop and a beautiful contrast to Katie's soft and whimsical ruffles.  I love how she mixes up her accessories through the session and her hair, well, it's just perfect. yellow wedding bouquetsmyrtle beach wedding blogscharleston wedding vendorscharleston weddingscharleston wedding blogsblack wedding jewelryhilton head wedding blogsmyrtle beach wedding vendorsmyrtle beach weddingsdana cubbage wedding photographyhilton head wedding vendorssouthern wedding vendors

Downtown Engagement {Jessica + Thomas}

Thomas grew up and Charleston and quickly his love for the Holy City grew on his bride-to-be Jessica.  Without question, they knew it was the perfect location for the engagement session.  The weather was warm and sunny which made for the kind of dreamy lighting we love here at A Lowcountry Wedding!  The twosome looked adorable in their preppy attire as they toured the Downtown area and Battery Park.  Thanks to Charleston wedding vendor, Peach Blossom Photography for this classic, Lowcountry engagement session! charleston wedding photography

Pelican Watch Shelter {Melissa + Steven}

If you're planning a destination wedding in the Lowcountry and are looking for low-key venue by the beach, then Melissa + Steven's Charleston wedding will be right up your alley!  The couple selected the Pelican Watch Shelter to host their reception and it was the perfect location for their Folly Beach affair.  Guests were treated to a beautiful, coastal reception of yellows and coral designed by Charleston Wedding Design and Lowcountry cuisine from Hamby Catering and Events.  They joined Richard Bell Photography on the beach after the reception for photos and even though it was high tide, it was sure worth it!

Boone Hall Plantation {Amanda}

It's no question that the Lowcountry is blessed with some of the most jaw-dropping wedding venues in the South and one that will always find it's way to the top of my venue list is Charleston's Boone Hall Plantation.  It's got everything a Lowcountry bride could dream of....Spanish moss dripping from every tree, a sprawling plantation home encircled by a stunning wrought-iron fence and immaculate grounds that make for the perfect Lowcountry backdrop....I mean, the place is just magical.  So, it's no surprise that Boone Hall is the venue of choice for dreamy, Charleston weddings and swoon-worthy bridal sessions.  Lucky for us, the talented Chi Photography captured Southern Belle,Amanda as she posed for the camera in her airy, textured gown and sassy pink heels.
