Give us a little background on how Burnett’s Boards came to life: It was a total fluke. I started in a whim while I was teaching mostly because I had discovered Pinterest, fell in love with it, and decided that wedding inspiration boards were the greatest things ever. It took 6 months but it blew up one day - like from me and my mom looking at to a post that went viral at the end of 2012 so I kept nursing it - learned about self-hosting, and set up a proper blog. Now it's my full-time job.

What has been your proudest accomplishment since launching Burnett’s Boards?  Bringing new clients and fans to the creatives who I've featured. That always makes my day when I hear that from them. Also - working on inspiration shoots. It's such a great experience and I love seeing wedding pros in action!

Priscilla Thomas Photography {Spotlight}

It’s about time we introduced you to our friend and Charleston wedding photographer, Priscilla, of Priscilla Thomas Photography.  Time and time again, Priscilla delivers beautiful imagery to Lowcountry brides but she always goes a step further to truly create a memorable experience for the Bride and Groom.  She says, “If you just want a pretty picture, then we may not be a fit. But if you want an experience, a visual story crafted with your unique moments, then let me grab my camera and we can see where the journey takes us…” Um, yes please!  We are so proud to have her as part of the A Lowcountry Wedding family and are excited to share her story with all of you today! Give a big ol’ welcome to Priscilla Thomas Photography

Tell us a little bit about yourself…and by a little, we mean a lot :)

  • I was born on a U.S. Air Force base in Keflavik, Iceland, to parents native to Mississippi and Louisiana. My early childhood was spent in Alamogordo, NM, before my family returned to some southern comfort in Charleston, SC.
  • Photography has been a part of my life since adolescence when I worked on the school newspaper and yearbook. During college, I contributed editorial op-ed pieces to The George Street Observer at the College of Charleston and continued to embrace photographic ventures. After college, I started freelancing in photography and writing in Charleston, SC.
  • My passion for photography, visual storytelling, and culture has also fueled a love of travel. Since my junior year in college, I’ve traveled to India, Turkey, Greece, Mexico, Germany, and Jordan.
  • I received a B.A. in Religious Studies from the College of Charleston. Recently, I completed the coursework for a M.A. in Visual Communication with a concentration in Photojournalism and cognate in Multimedia at one of the top programs in the nation at Ohio University.
  • When I’m not photographing, I enjoy reading, short story writing, and such guilty pleasure as This American Life, Samoa Girl Scout Cookies, and indie films.

Give us a little background on how your business came to life...

The business definitely wasn't planned. After graduating from College of Charleston in 2007, I had originally planned to go abroad and teach English. But like a lot of things in life, the plan changed. Instead of traveling, I found myself working full time in an accounting office. Though I enjoyed my coworkers and was fortunate to have great bosses, that professional field just wasn't for me. I considered it cubicle servitude and couldn't imagine doing that for forty years. What eventually led me to photography was going back to my media roots. In high school, I had been on the yearbook and newspaper staffs. During college, I contributed a few op-ed pieces to the George Street Observer. So, I wanted to go back that field, but I wanted to give proper attention to the photos as well. Usually the photographs were just afterthoughts or something to go with the words. But I always love a great story, and a visual one can be more captivating than a 10,000 word novel. So, in 2008 I picked up a camera with a new purpose. It wasn't going to be a mere hobby anymore. I started seeing my mentor, Mikayla Mackaness, and photographing every chance I could. In 2010, I found myself moving to Athens, Ohio, to attend a graduate program in visual communication for photojournalism at Ohio University. And then last June, I moved back to Charleston. I honestly don't consider what I do a business. It's a service. It's a privilege. To be chosen to document a moment in someone's life, whether it's a wedding or just daily life, is an honor and a great responsibility that I do not take lightly. The business stuff just comes with making this a career, but the people I meet and telling visual stories is the reason I stay in this business.

What is the one tip you wish you could tell every bride?

I can only tell one?! I'm working on a welcome packet to tell them a lot of tips! I think one of the most important tips is to never forget what your wedding day is about - the love each of you have for one another. Planning a wedding can definitely be overwhelming. And I think in some ways social media has amplified that. Brides are inundated with wedding related information - example: Pinterest. So don't get too wrapped up in the burlap runners and coral stained ribbon. Plan a wedding that reflects your fiance and you and focus on enjoying your special day.

How can a bride come prepared to her first appointment with you?

The first appointment is really where we determine if we're a good fit. Out of all the wedding vendors, brides need to be most comfortable with their photographer. This is because the photographer is with you the majority of the day. If a bride isn't relaxed around the photographer then it will show in the images. So, the first purpose of the initial meeting is to get to know each other a little better. The other reason is to discuss what they're envisioning for wedding photography. I always like to discuss photo ideas for the wedding and I also make sure that the bride understands my style and aesthetic approach. It's up to the couple to decide if my style and personality is a fit for them. As for being prepared, I think the most difficult part for a bride is determining the style of photography she likes and being able to distinguish styles in wedding photographs. Looking at wedding photos and finding images she likes is a step in the right direction. However, often times it takes a consultation with a photographer to help a couple figure out which style best suits them and their wedding.

In three words, sum up your style...

Candid & stylized portraiture

Favorite wedding image you've ever snapped.

There's one per wedding. This would take too long to tell you about all of them. ;)

What blogs provide you daily inspiration to keep your creative juices flowing (non-wedding related)

Since I come from a photojournalism background, I often look at blogs in that field. New York Time's Lens Blog is excellent. Time's Lightbox. I also enjoy the Image Deconstructed which interviews photographers on how they captured a particular photograph. To hear the photographer's voice, which often times never accompanies the picture, offers greater insight in the photography process as well as what photographers internalize from the people they meet and the experiences they have when image making.

Tell us a little bit about yourself…and by a little, we mean a lot :)

I was born in New York and raised in Maryland, but my heart belongs to South Carolina.  After spending 6+ years in finance, I rediscovered this love for photography and decided to try and fulfill my dream of building my own business + finally doing something I absolutely love for a living.  And wow – 2 years into it, I can finally say I'm living the dream!  I started out specializing in pet photography, which is something I still do + love.  I've always had a special connection with pets, especially dogs, so that was a natural fit for me.  While volunteering at my local animal shelter in Baltimore, I met another photographer who specialized in weddings.  We became good friends through volunteering and so I asked her if I could tag along and help out with some of her weddings.  She said yes and I fell in love with it.  That was in the fall of 2011.  We moved to Charleston in January 2012 and I spent all of 2012 second shooting with some amazing photographers here in Charleston, learning the business + sharpening my technical skills.  After booking pretty much every weekend, I thought to myself "maybe I could do this full-time and quit my day job" (which I hated).  So I gave myself a deadline – by August 1, I would have a website up and I'd start marketing myself.  Well, as luck would have it, I was laid off from my full-time job on July 31 and so I was pushed into life as a full-time photographer.  But it was the best thing that ever happened to me.  Since then, I've been working hard to build my wedding photography business and it's been amazing.  I think back to my life a year ago and still can't believe how much has happened and how incredibly lucky I am to finally be doing something I absolutely love for a living.

I'm married to my best friend, Brian, and we have 3 dogs – two Golden Retrievers named Camden + Brady, and a small lab-pit bull mix named Beckham.  I love to read, travel + eat… but not necessarily in that order.  I love reality TV, Starbucks, and anything that sparkles.

Give us a little background on how your business came to life...

I've always loved photography.  I can remember using my parent's film Minolta when I was young and I just LOVED taking photos of anything… but especially of my pets.  When my parents got me my own camera one year for my birthday, I was in love.  I took a camera with me everywhere and I still have boxes of prints + albums from my childhood.  I just can't bear to get rid of them!  When I bought my first DSLR camera in 2010, something clicked.  I had always loved photography – capturing moments – but the DSLR allowed me to create art.  I loved that!!  So I dove into it, learning how to shoot manually and taking in as much information as possible.  I started my pet photography business in early 2011 and my wedding photography business in August 2012.  It's been an amazing couple of years!

What is the one tip you wish you could tell every bride?

When you're looking for a wedding photographer, make sure whoever you book makes you feel confident and comfortable.  Feeling at ease with your photographer will only enhance your images in the end.

How can a bride come prepared to her first appointment with you?

I love when my brides come to me with ideas.  Although I rely on my own creativity, it's always great when brides are vocal about what inspires them and what exactly they love about my work, so that I can focus on providing them with great images that they will be over-the-moon excited about.  I guess I really like brides who aren't afraid to speak up and let me know what they are really looking for when they hire me.  It helps ensure that we're both on the same page and that we are the right fit for each other.

There are so many wonderful images, it's hard to choose just one!  Right now, it's a tie between Becca + Jay's portrait on the beach (below) and Stephanie + Jason's portrait on the beach (first image).  I just love the light in the first one and the cool tree in the second one :)  Both of them are on the homepage of my website.  That's where most of my recent favorites live!

I'm pretty good at saving money and sticking to my budget, but every once in a while, I have to hit up the J Crew outlet for some new clothes :)

What blogs provide you daily inspiration to keep your creative juices flowing (non-wedding related) ?

I follow a lot of designers on Facebook that keep me inspired – Promise Tangeman, Ravyn Stadick, Jennifer Olmstead.  Most of the blogs I read are wedding related or pet photography related.  I gain my inspiration from real life and things around me.  When I'm out and about, I'm constantly inspired by light, architecture, textures, colors + unique locations.  I am always on the look out and thinking of new things I could bring to my work.

What the most rewarding thing about your line of work?

Being a part of my clients' wedding day is so rewarding.  Becoming friends with them throughout the process is amazing and something I cherish.  Sharing + capturing their joy and their love is indescribable.  I'm so blessed.

Charleston Wedding Vendor {Brackish Bow Ties}

A few weeks ago, I made my way to Charleston Fashion Week's Spring Bridal Show, which was, as I’m sure you could guess, over-the-top and fabulous.  Not only were the gowns amazing, but upon arrival, I was greeted by a group of talented Charleston wedding vendors, one of my personal favorites were the boys of Brackish Bow Ties! hilton head weddings

These two gents, Jeff + Ben, are the brains behind Brackish Bow Ties.  When Ben was tying the knot, he designed the first turkey feather bow ties for his groomsmen to sport on his wedding day.  Naturally, they were a huge success!

I recently ran across Haymarket Designs on Pinterest and instantly fell madly, deeply in love!  With their preppy style and fresh modern edge, Haymarket Designs can provide that extra touch of Southern flair to any of your Lowcountry wedding events.  They've got an adorable variety of koozies that would be a perfect addition for a couple's shower or a lively bachelorette weekend at the beach.  Better yet, having a hard time picking out bridesmaids gifts?  I know some of my gals would have gone bananas over those precious wine totes...just sayin!  My favorite part, you can customize every item by selecting the design, color and font of your choice. Sewee Preserve {Charleston Wedding Venue}

Ladies, we’ve got another new, Lowcountry venue on our hands, so let's get started gawking over it's coastal charm!  The Sewee Preserve opened its doors this year and is already booking weddings for 2012 and beyond.  Located just outside of Charleston, in Awendaw, South Carolina, this breathtaking wedding venue consists of a 500-acre conservation development dedicated to preserving the serenity and natural beauty of our beloved Lowcountry…so you know what that means, gorgeous saltwater marshes, jaw-dropping Oak trees and that soft, coastal breeze that we've come to love at a Charleston wedding.

http://seweepreserve.net/index.php

The property offers an array of ceremony and receptions options that will be available to you from 10am until midnight on the day of your event.  It includes 1,000 square feet of covered area, an over-sized brick fireplace, Southern-style porches, bocce ball court and horseshoe pit and a 50-acre freshwater lake with dock.  Sounds like heaven, right?  Well lucky for us, Virgil Bunao Photography and Ooh! Events teamed up to show us what the Sewee Preserve's all about (and Lord knows we love when these two talents collaborate!) So, check out this fabulous, new Charleston wedding venue…

Hibernian Hall Wedding {Erin + Brian}

Two years ago, I said 'I do' to this guy....

So, I figured, what better way to celebrate our anniversary, then to share our gorgeous Charleston wedding day with images from Jack Whitsitt!  The ladies kicked off the day with hair and make up at Elysium Salon before returning to the beautiful Meeting Street Inn to get all dolled up.  The bridesmaids wore strapless, knee-length LulaKate dresses in a summery, apple green color.  The boys spent the morning at the Francis Marion Hotel where they were dressed in classic, black tuxedos complete with bow ties, while they waited for an Absolutely Charleston trolley to transport them to the Citadel campus for pre-ceremony pics!  A bagpiper escorted the bridal party down the aisle at the Summerall Chapel to begin our traditional, Catholic ceremony.  After our 'I do's', we headed to the historic Hibernian Hall for an amazing evening of celebrating with our friends and family!  Cru Catering served a smorgasbord of Lowcountry cuisine including shrimp and grits (which people are still raving about!), the Travis Allison Band kept everyone up and moving all night long, and for a late night snack, Brian treated our guests to McDonald's double cheeseburgers!  If we could do it over again, we would in a heartbeat...easily, the best night of our lives :)  Emma, sorry for the dancing pic - I just had to do it!
