Navy Pavilion at Patriots Point Wedding by Sweetgrass Social

If you're a Southern gal who's in the mood for a preppy affair, then sit down and take a peek at this Pavilion at Patriots Point wedding from the sweet ladies at Sweetgrass Social.  It's everything you could want in a Lowcountry wedding and so much more.  We love the navy color palette, the boys in their dinner jackets (so very T-Rav of them!), the Citadel ceremony, the charming Navy table runners and last but definitely not least, Shannon's stunning gown.  Thanks to Jamie Clayton Photography for capturing all of the wonderful details. Charleston, Hilton Head, Myrtle Beach, Savannah Weddings

What is your engagement story:
"Dan and I are high school sweethearts.  We had been dating (with the usual college ups + downs) for 10 years, 1 month, and 1 day on the day of our wedding.  So the wedding, especially the reception, was as much about thanking our family and friends for being by our sides during all those years together as it was celebrating our marriage.  We wanted to make sure they felt special and knew how much we appreciated each of them - which was what inspired the photo escort cards and the thank you place cards."

Why did you choose Charleston for your wedding?
"Dan went to the Citadel and we have so many wonderful memories in the city from our college days. So we knew Charleston was the perfect place to "trap" all of our family and friends for a long weekend (a welcome party Friday, beach day Saturday, rehearsal dinner Saturday night) so that by the time Sunday night rolled round everyone felt like family."

What were your favorite wedding details from the weekend?
While beautiful, my mother's dress was quite different from the look I envisioned for myself; it was form fitting and all lace. Therefore, I ended up seeking out my perfect dress.  But, I knew I had to honor my mom in some way so we included the beautiful lace from her dress by wrapping it around my bouquet and my grandmother sewed a small purse for me to carry made out of my mom's dress.  My great grandmother's brooch was also pinned to my bouquet as my something borrowed.

"Selecting our readings and readers was very important to us.  My grandmothers read a poem called 'On Your Wedding Day'.  They are two of my favorite people in the entire world, and it was very important to me to include them.  The poem, which was about marriage and the new beginnings, was so fitting for the occasion, and I thought there was no one better to share that than two women who I looked up to and had great loves in their life.  We also had Dan's brother's fiance (and the mom of our adorable flower girl) read 1st Corinthians. We knew it was a popular reading, but it's message was very important to us."

What were the most memorable parts of the day?
" I would have to say the first look. On the day of the wedding we were both nervous and very excited, especially Dan.  I can't even describe the moment of seeing him for the first time, but for both of us it was like a wave of calmness and serenity ( silly as that may sound.)  I later learned Dan was very anxious and stressed which he says all went away after the first look and being able to tell me all about his morning.  I am so glad that we had the first look so he could be calm and present during the ceremony.  A close second, was our last song - Piano Man.  It has become a tradition at our New Years Eve parties to play Piano Man just after midnight.  So we decided to select it as the last song of the reception, and swaying in a quite large circle with our best friends and family singing our hearts out was such a happy, perfect ending to what really was our perfect wedding.

Rice Mill Building Wedding by Dana Cubbage Photography + Ooh! Events

We're excited to be back from the long holiday weekend so we can share a dose of coastal perfection from the talented Dana Cubbage Weddings.  You may remember awhile back when we had the pleasure of sharing Megan + Jay's Downtown Charleston engagement session.  It was gorgeous, so it won't be any surprise when you lay your eyes on their stunning Rice Mill wedding.  With a gorgeous pastel palette and a meaningful Lowcountry backdrop on the Ashley River, their day couldn't have been more perfect. Jay and Megan love to spend their spare time on the water, and Jay proposed to Megan while on a boating day trip last year, so it was only natural to incorporate the water and boats into their wedding day.   Ooh! Events designed elegant floral arrangements with a nautical navy accent, while A Charleston Event pulled the whole day together.  Fun lounge furniture created a laid back feel to the venue and the Coconut Groove Band kept the dance floor packed all night with a fun selection of island music + oldies. Jay + Megan drove away in a vintage teal 1962 Cadillac Deville from Lowcountry Valet & Shuttle. Charleston Weddings, Hilton Head Weddings, Myrtle Beach Weddings

Alhambra Hall Wedding by Sally Watts Photography

You know we love us some Sally Watts Photography over here at ALW.  I'm pretty sure she could snap a picture of my old, dirty tennis shoes and make it frame-worthy!  Her timeless approach to photography makes her an obvious addition to any bride planning a Charleston wedding, something that Bride Anna knows oh-so-well.  Sally captured Anna + Chad's gorgeous Alhambra Hall wedding just over the bridge in Mount Pleasant and we're in LOVE with the dreamy portraits she captured on that crisp December day. Wedding Elopement at Magnolia Plantation by Whimsey Photography by Cana

I love when our photographers share a little insight about the sweet couples that we're blessed to share here on A Lowcountry Wedding.  I always like hearing about their love and it's so fun to experience it through those who are able to capture it in person.  The talented Whimsey Photography by Cana was blessed to hang out with the adorable Sharon + Tom at Magnolia Plantation for their truly beautiful Charleston wedding elopement.  Thanks to Cana for sharing all the details... Charleston Weddings, Hilton Head Weddings, Myrtle Beach Weddings

" Sharon and Tom met in college, where Tom took a fancy to her pretty quickly. Sharon, on the other hand, was uninterested, thinking Tom was just another frat boy. Soon after giving in to hanging out with him one day, her heart began to melt and soften towards Tom, realizing he was a very humble soul who made her laugh and giggle (which is very important, ladies!). The two began dating and decided to get married just before Tom left for Afghanistan for a year. When he got back, they decided to experience the whole newlywed adventure – they went on their long-awaited honeymoon, and decided to get their wedding portraits taken, which they traveled to Charleston for. What an honor it was to take photos for this beautiful couple! Thank you, Sharon and Tom, for choosing me to capture the beauty of your marriage! And a special thank you to Tom for his service. What a sacrifice this couple has made to be together. That is true love, my friends."

Clemson-Themed Cooper River Room Wedding by Richard Bell Photography

Bride Lauren and her Groom Micah are huge Clemson fans, so when the began planning their beautiful Cooper River Room wedding, they knew incorporating their favorite team's colors were a must.   The bridesmaids wore vibrant purple dresses that perfectly matched the pocket squares and ties the guys donned.  Orange lilies and roses were paired with purple hydrangeas to finish off the cheery look.  Lauren wore a GORGEOUS gown with capped sleeves and a full, ruffled skirt.  Thanks to the wonderful crew at Richard Bell Photography for capturing all the details of this beautiful Charleston wedding! Charleston Weddings, Hilton head Weddings, Myrtle Beach Weddings

From The Bride: "We wanted our wedding to be a reflection of all things that are important to us: family, friends, faith, food, fall, and football. We prefer simple and natural decorations and we tried to incorporate as many sustainable elements as possible. Even our wedding invitations can be planted and grown into wild flowers. We are big proponents of local businesses so everything from our food to our cake to our favors were all from local businesses. Our wedding colors are orange and purple. They remind us of our favorite time of the year- Fall and of our favorite football team- Clemson!"

Magnolia Plantation Wedding by Riverland Studios and Duvall Events

A gorgeous Sarah Seven gown, hints of baby's breath and sweet Southern details make for a laid back (and gorgeous!) Magnolia Plantation wedding from our friends at Riverland Studios.  With the help of Duvall Events, Rachele & Michael were married in a magical outdoor ceremony under the magnificent oak trees on the carriage house lawn. The bride chose a color palette of cream with turquoise accents, which was the perfect compliment to this romantic summer wedding. We love the elegant and chic decor placed against the rustic outdoor setting. The newlyweds celebrated their reception inside, which exuded an equal amount of sweet Lowcountry charm- complete with Spanish moss and mason jar chandeliers, twinkling strings of lights, and an assortment of vintage chinaware. Rustic Hyde Park Polo Club Wedding by Stefanie Kapra Photography

We hope everyone had a lovely weekend!  We're so excited to share this beautiful Hyde Park Polo Club Wedding from Stefanie Kapra Photography because we're quite certain you'll be enchanted by this rustic beauty!  Erin and Paul had planned an intimate wedding in their backyard - by the river. The house they live in has been in their family for generations and therefore felt like the perfect location for their wedding. Erin even planted all her own wedding flowers the year before the wedding - so she could have fresh flowers from the yard for the bouquet and decor.  And then the rain and water came and the river flooded their entire yard and street - so they even had to evacuate the house for a little while. The water stayed for weeks - turning their yard into a swamp - making it impossible for the wedding celebrations to take place there Charleston Weddings, Hilton Head Weddings, Myrtle Beach WeddingsCharleston Weddings, Hilton Head Weddings, Myrtle Beach WeddingsCharleston Weddings, Hilton Head Weddings, Myrtle Beach WeddingsCharleston Weddings, Hilton Head Weddings, Myrtle Beach WeddingsCharleston Weddings, Hilton Head Weddings, Myrtle Beach WeddingsCharleston Weddings, Hilton Head Weddings, Myrtle Beach Weddings

At first, Erin and Paul were devastated. But they felt that the only thing that really mattered was that they would say yes to each other and celebrate their love with their loved ones. So instead of giving up, they kept looking for an alternative and kept their positive spirit alive - and in the end they were rewarded and found a hidden little gem to celebrate their wedding at: Hyde Park Farm & Polo Club. It is not a classical wedding venue per se - but it offers a lot of rustic charm and the necessary room/amenities - all while offering a back yard feel.

Upon our arrival, we were greeted by chickens and horses - which immediately created a cozy atmosphere. Erin and Paul set up their ceremony side by a little pond underneath an old life oak tree. A wooden pavilion was used for the reception and the caterer set up the buffet in the old barn. Here and there, one of the horses would get curious and peek over the fence - completing the rustic and intimate feel. For decor, Erin and Paul used oil lamps from Erin's grandma and other relatives - they fit in very nicely with the entire look/feel. To round it all up, fans made from sweet grass as well as local honey was given to the guests as favors to take home.

Powder Blue Island House Wedding by Jennifer Bearden Photography

Last week, I opened up a Save-the-date for our friends' Lowcountry wedding later this year at the Island House and after obsessing over this beauty, I couldn't be more excited.  It's the perfect Charleston wedding venue for a couple looking for a laid-back Southern bash on the water with a nice salty breeze.  The talented Jennifer Bearden Photography teamed up with A. Caldwell Events, First Bloom of Charleston and Cru Catering for Annie + Carey's dreamy Southern affair! Charleston Weddings, Hilton Head Weddings, Myrtle Beach Weddings, Savannah Weddings

From the Bride: "Carey and I have been dating for 8 years. We lived in the same dorm in college. We had many mutual friends but never really hung out. My junior year my brother moved in Carey. We started hanging out and as they say the rest is history. Carey is the best friend I could have ever asked for and our wedding was everything I had ever dreamt of. It was just perfect. As we called it was Pottery Parn meets Pinterest with a touch of rustic. It was laid back but still elegant. The ceremony was outside on the Stono River. The weather was just perfect. The bridesmaids were in soft blue chiffon and guys in navy suits. The aisle was lined with mason jars filled with soft pink, blues, and white flowers. Petals were scattered on the grass around the altar where a large piping held fabric pulled by and secured with large white flower arrangements. The ceremony was held in the tent outside. The seating charts were on old easels that we had found, refurbished and painted each window pane with chalkboard paint. The tables were lined with burlap runners. Flowers (blues, pinks, whites) were in different size and shaped vases and candles in hurricane holders were the centerpieces. We had made the table numbers. I had glued numbers to a block and then spray painted them. They looked great. ‘Mr’ & ‘Mrs’ sign were used on Carey and I chairs. I had a memory candle burn in honor of my brother who is no longer with us. The cake was amazing. It was 4 tiers with lace to match my dress. The cake topper was the best. We are big animal lovers and had a handmade clay topper of Carey and I with all our animals; two labs and our cat. We had used A&C throughout our whole wedding. It was on our save the dates, our invitations and on the mason jars that were our favors for guest. It was the best day ever!"

South Carolina Aquarium Wedding from Richard Bell Photography

We sure do love South Carolina Aquarium weddings!   So much so that we were lucky enough to feature it in our most recent issue.  You may remember our gorgeous Southern Sparkle shoot we shared in our premier issue of A Lowcountry Wedding Magazine.  It was outside on the Deck with gorgeous views of the Charleston Harbor.  Pretty breathtaking if you ask me!  Well, this gorgeous ocean-inspired wedding from Ashley Nicole Events and Richard Bell Photography incorporated everything we love about the South Carolina Aquarium.  A stunning evening ceremony overlooking the Harbor and the Cooper River Bridge, a festive octopus cake and whimsical fish-filled aquariums at every turn. Charleston Weddings, Hilton Head Weddings, Myrtle Beach Weddings, Savannah Weddings

From the Bride: "Brian and I love aquariums, sea life and conservation, so the aquarium was a no-brainer choice for us. Every place we visit, we make a point to visit the aquariums too- it's our tradition. Plus, my sister works as the PR director for the Aquarium, so she really sold us on the venue! We wanted to incorporate aspects of ourselves and our loves into our wedding and reception, which is a mix of art deco and the ocean. Interesting combo, I know! My dress is a Jenny Packham and screamed art deco to me. I paired it with a vintage Eduardian pin from the 1920's which is being made into a pendant. Brian and his groomsmen (and one groomswoman!) wore a Vineyard Vines cummerbund set with their tuxes (and a flower accent for the groomswoman) that featured little blue crabs (Brian's favorite!) on a coral background. Brian's boutonniere is held by an electroplated crab claw in silver. The bridesmaids wore a one-shouldered After Six gown in jade that has ruching that went hand-in-hand with my dress. Our colors were jade, coral and a deep blue...mirroring the colors of Mother Ocean. We wanted nature to play a large part in our celebration, so we decided to wed under the stars on the Aquarium's veranda. In addition to our love of fish, we also love Phish, the band. We incorporated small, subtle tokens featuring Phish throughout, including our first dance (Show of Life), lyrics from Phish songs on each table and our favors: donations to both the waterwheel foundation (Phish's charity that gives back to various programs throughout the nation) and the sea turtle hospital (of the SC aquarium)"

Charleston Weddings {Amanda + Derek} Pepper Plantation

Our first issue of A Lowcountry Wedding Magazine served up quite an amazing group of Southern soirees filled with darling details from the top vendors on the coast of Carolina.  They were pretty amazing if I do say so myself, and Amanda + Derek's Pepper Plantation wedding was at the top of the list!  We all love Charleston weddings and when captured by Sean Money + Elizabeth Fay they tend to take our breath away.  The minute I caught a glance of Amanda's dreamy neutral color palette I was hooked and the loveliness didn't stop there.  The beautiful bride, her mother and sister teamed up with those talented ladies over at Ooh! Events to pull off a Lowcountry bash for books and the details are bound to make you swoon!  Dying to see more?! Check out all the details in our complete digital edition of A Lowcountry Wedding Mag available for purchase here!

"Derek is a Southern gentleman from Alabama, and I'm a California girl.  Derek moved to California for his job and since he didn't know anyone there when he moved, his boss suggested he join eharmony to help him meet people.  Since I was always meeting the wrong men, my friends and I popped open a bottle of wine one night and they created my profile for me.  He was the first guy who contacted me. We began emailing, then texting, then finally met.  After a year and a half of dating he proposed!  (There is more of our individual bios on our wedding website that you are welcome to use if you want more information).

Since all of my family lives in California, and all of his family lives in Alabama, we were going to have the wedding somewhere in the middle, but finally decided on Charleston.  I had traveled there before and fell in love with the city.  I knew this was going to be a challenge, planning a wedding from across the country, and couldn't have done it without the help of my Mom and Sister."

What made you choose your venue? What elements drew you to it?

When booking The Pepper Plantation we literally had to take a leap of faith.  Planning from California, we had never seen the Charleston wedding venue in person but fell in love with the pictures we saw online.  We found out that March 16th was the only date available.  I remember calling Derek and saying, "I think we should just book it."  I don't know what came over me.  I think I was eager to put a big, fate, red check mark next to something on my endless "wedding planning" list.  When the day finally came to see the venue in person, we were so happy!  We love the open wood beams on the inside, and the rustic/masculine feel.  Also the fact that it's just outside donwtown Charleston.  "We did good babe" was what Derek told me after walking around the venue for the first time.  I think we did good too.

Tell us all about the details!  Did any have special meaning? What was your favorite?

My Mother worked at a florist in Orange Country, CA for many years so the flowers were her department, and they turned out beautiful.  We had to book all of our Charleston wedding vendors in advance without any interviews.  This is where A Low Country Wedding helped tremendously.  I found most of my vendors through your site.  After booking, my Mom, sister and I made a "girls trip" to Charleston where we set-up meetings with everyone!  It was quite a trip!  Coincidentally, my husband's job relocated him to Greenville, SC so I ended up moving there with him in January.  My Mom would ship me homemade details to bring to the wedding.  She created a custom moss-covered "H" (for Holley) to sit on the mantle, and it sits on the mantle in our home today.  My sister made all of my programs and shipped those to me.  They shipped me horseshoes to have as a lawn game.  One of my favorite details was our guestbook that they had ordered off etsy.  Guests would "leaf" their fingerprint on a hand-painted tree.

I also loved the antique bar we rented, our cigar bar and the lawn games we had for guests to enjoy (corn hole and horseshoes).  With so many activities going on, it was such a fun afternoon!  Our guests from California loved all the "Southern" touches that they never would have experienced at a wedding in California.  We also collected pictures of us as children and put mine on the "Ladies" room door and his on the "Gentlemens" room door.  This was such a cute touch that our guests loved.

I hate taking pictures (and so does Derek) but one of the most surprising aspects of that day was how much fun we had taking pictures with our photographers.  Sean and Elizabeth are SO unbelievably awesome at what they do.  They met with us before the wedding a couple times, spent quality time with us, laughed with us, I mean... really got to know us.  The first time Derek took me home to meet his family in Alabama, he took me hunting and I shot a Buck.  I think that made him fall in love with me! ;-)  This CA girl had never even shot a gun.  Anyway, Sean knew Derek was a big hunter and brought this really cool antique gun for us to pose with.  They brought fun props (like old cameras) for us to play around with.  It made our pictures tell our love story and every time I look at them I smile at how much fun we have together.

For the week of the wedding, my Parents rented a huge beach house on the Isle of Palms for my entire bridal party to stay in. It was the most favorite week of my life.  Every day we had a different assembly line going on.  We bought pralines from the open market in downtown Charleston, stuffed them in bags tied with ribbon, made homemade "Love is Sweet" stickers and gave them to guests as favors.  We made my seating chart, bought the frame for my guestbook.  Every where I looked the night of my wedding reminded me of the love from my family and girlfriends.  Without their help, I would have been a disaster.

How did he propose?  How long were you engaged for?

I knew the engagement was coming.  We had to talk about the move to South Carolina and the timeline of everything.  I am the hardest person to surprise because I guess everything.  Every time Derek would say we're going out to dinner... ask me to go on a walk... I would think "this it it!! get ready!!"  He KNEW I was anticipating it.  One night I was going to his house after work.  I was stuck in Los Angeles traffic and in a bad mood when he called and said he wouldn't be home until later that evening because he had to help his boss move.  He said he would leave the key to his house in the tomato plant we had just planted together.  I get to his place, go up the steps to the door, look in the tomato plant and there is a ring box.  He opens the door, crying like I've never seen him cry before, got on one knee and proposed.  He definitely surprised a girl who can't be surprised!

What’s your favorite picture from your wedding and why?

This is such a difficult question.  I LOVE all of our pictures, really and truly.  I cannot give enough praise to Sean and Elizabeth.  A picture that stands out in my mind is one that wasn't planned.  Derek and I were on the dance floor with all of our family and friends having the time of our lives, unaware that anyone was taking a picture of us and Sean & Elizabeth captured that perfect moment.  It's in black & white and we're just staring into each other's eyes.  I love it!

Tell us a little bit about your menu…

Since the majority of my guests were coming from California, I really wanted them to get a taste of the South.  We had boiled peanuts by the bar during cocktail hour and pimiento cheese was passed around with some other delicious creations by The Crazy Dutchman.  (When I first started dating Derek, I had never even heard of pimiento cheese).  Shrimp and Grits, pork tenderloin and delicious sides were served at dinner with sweet tea of course.

Specialty Drinks?

When I first moved to South Carolina I discovered Firefly Sweet Tea vodka, so of course that had to be my specialty drink!  Derek chose scotch as his signature drink to go along with the cigar bar we created near the outside fireplace.  We had custom matchbooks made with our names and a deer with antlers on the front to appeal to all the men.  He also made sure to have the local Palmetto micro-brew as a beer selection.

Most valuable piece of advice you’d give to a newly engaged bride

Really take time to enjoy the process and the big day.  It is SO easy to stress about every little detail and become Bridezilla.  Try to not worry about what other people will think.  Think about what you want, what you love, your love for your fiancé and take help from whoever offers!  Most importantly,  soak up every moment of your wedding day.  After months of planning, it goes by way too fast.  I remember being on the dance floor and the wedding planner tapped me on the shoulder saying it was time to prepare for our farewell.  I started crying because I wasn't ready for the party to be over!

Charleston Wedding {Chloe + Kyle} Cabell House

I actually saw Chloe's wedding when her photographer, Taylor Rae Photography, had posted a teaser shot on her facebook page.  From there I was hooked.   Chloe's the epitome of my ideal Southern bride.  Her hair and makeup are effortlessly perfect and her gown just stops me in my tracks.  Full skirt with 3/4 length lace sleeves?  Yes, please.  So, naturally, I had to include her Charleston wedding at the Cabell House in our premier issue of A Lowcountry Wedding, and, from the looks of it, you've all been loving it!  Dying to see more?! Check out all the details in our complete digital edition of A Lowcountry Wedding Mag which you can purchase here!

Chloe made the wedding her own, but the beautiful contributions her family made simply cannot be ignored. The bride chose a color palate of greys and white with a hint of black that created an effortless and graceful feel. These colors were incorporated in the handmade pillow her mother crafted for her nephew, the ring bearer, to carry down the aisle. Also incorporated in the color palate were the white peonies and roses that were seen in all of the day’s floral arrangements. The bridal bouquet was completed by a small antique bell that Chloe’s grandmother has worn all of her life.

After the courtyard ceremony, the guests sat down to a family style meal at an extended farm table where they were treated to a traditional Southern fare of the fried chicken, mac and cheese, country ham, and fried okra. Spanish moss served as a table runner, which was lined with subdued floral arrangements in mercury glass votives. The intimate mood of the evening was truly set by the flower filled chandelier hanging over the table, which the father of the bride crafted for the occasion.

Charleston Wedding {Tiffany + Jeremiah}

After a Saturday full of wind and rain, I think we all deserve to be spoiled with a lovely dose of Charleston weddings, wouldn't you say?  We're starting with a Lowcountry beauty from Tomme Hilton Gallery that I knew I had to share the minute I laid eyes on it.  Tiffany + Jeremiah have been together for 10 yrs and finally, after adding 3 little ones to their growing family,  they decided to make it official.  They planned a beautiful fall evening on Wadmalaw Island and it was just what the doctor ordered.  Tiffany's glow initially caught my eye.  She glowed in a strapless gown she paired with a chunky mint necklace and a pale pink hair piece.  Jeremiah kept things casual in a vibrant pink polo and jeans while their boys wore pale pink polos.  Tiffany's carried the perfect rustic bouquet filled with white hydrangeas, pink roses, greenery and berries.
