Haig Point Lighthouse Wedding by Once Like A Spark Photography

I'll just say it.   I'm flat out obsessed with this adorable Haig Point Lighthouse wedding from {Once Like A Spark} Photography.  I'm talking head-over-heels, can't-get-enough-of-it, I-wanna-pin-each-and-every-image in L.O.V.E.    Bride Cali and her man Robert are nothing short of adorable and the sweet twosome were smiling from ear-to-ear all day long.  The couple selected one of our favorite Lowcountry wedding locales, the enchanting Daufuskie Island, to host their lively bash with some of our favorite Southern vendors.  The talented Tori Burgio of Every Thine Vintage was the stylish lady at the wheel, while Gertie Mae's Floral Studio created eye-catching arrangements and that stunning bouquet. Magnolia Plantation Wedding by amelia + dan photography & Ooh! Events

We're always up to feast our eyes on a sweet Magnolia Plantation wedding, but when mixed with a day-after session at Angel Oak, it's almost too much for my little Lowcountry-wedding-obsessed heart to handle.  Toss amelia + dan photography and Ooh! Events into the fun and you've got a very pin-able Charleston wedding on your hands.  Bride Kayce stunned in a fitted, lace gown while her bridesmaids looked lovely in neutral dresses of their liking before piling into a vintage, yellow truck.  The men, on the other hand, donned yellow bow ties with grey suit pants before the couple met under the majestic Oak tree. That's When I Look at the Groom... {Groom's Reactions}

Typically, all eyes are on the bride when she makes her grand entrance on “the big day”- we’re captivated by her stunning gown, lovely bouquet, and the way that she exudes elegance as she makes her way down the aisle. But, let’s remember what Jane, the serial bridesmaid in 27 Dresses, described as her favorite part of weddings: “You know how the bride makes her entrance and everybody turns to look at her? That’s when I look at the groom. ‘Cause his face says it all you know? The pure love there.” A groom’s reaction when he first sees his bride is a moment unlike any other. We hope you enjoy these awe-worthy pictures of groom’s being taken aback by their beautiful brides.

Marion's in the French Quarter {Mingle} Paige Winn Photo

Last, but certainly not least, I'm excited to share the beautiful styled shoot Megan of Mingle created this past summer at Marion's in the French Quarter which was included in our premier issue of A Lowcountry Wedding Mag!  Megan was kind enough to invite us a long to enjoy the styling of the great Mingle minds, photography from Paige Winn Photo and dreamy gowns from Maddison Row!   Thanks to Paperdolls Hair & Makeup transforming model Katie into the picture-perfect Charleston Bride.  First Bloom of Charleston whipped vibrant bouquets and centerpieces while Limos for Less let us ride in style!   Even though we wanted to (and we sure did try!), we couldn’t include everything in the magazine, so to see all the details you can head on over and check out the complete Mag here! charleston weddings, hilton head weddings, myrtle beach weddingscharleston weddings, hilton head weddings, myrtle beach weddingscharleston weddings, hilton head weddings, myrtle beach weddingscharleston weddings, hilton head weddings, myrtle beach weddingscharleston weddings, hilton head weddings, myrtle beach weddingscharleston weddings, hilton head weddings, myrtle beach weddingscharleston weddings, hilton head weddings, myrtle beach weddingscharleston weddings, hilton head weddings, myrtle beach weddingscharleston weddings, hilton head weddings, myrtle beach weddingscharleston weddings, hilton head weddings, myrtle beach weddingscharleston weddings, hilton head weddings, myrtle beach weddingscharleston weddings, hilton head weddings, myrtle beach weddingscharleston weddings, hilton head weddings, myrtle beach weddingscharleston weddings, hilton head weddings, myrtle beach weddingscharleston weddings, hilton head weddings, myrtle beach weddingscharleston weddings, hilton head weddings, myrtle beach weddingscharleston weddings, hilton head weddings, myrtle beach weddings

Heritage Plantation Wedding {Robyn + Andy}

It totally slipped my mind that yesterday was Veterans’ Day (which might explain why I showed up at the County Treasurer’s Office to pay my car taxes and no one was there.  Whoopsies!).  Had I remembered, I absolutely would have shared Robyn + Andy’s quaint Heritage Plantation wedding from Dana Cubbage Wedding Photography but instead, we’ll just share it today! Since the lovely Dana Cubbage was there to capture all the details, it’s only fitting we let her tell their love story… ”Andy is in the Air Force and based in Louisiana, while Robyn lives and works in Missouri. These two have spent so much time apart, but their love for each other - and Robyn's 10 year old son, Drake - is evident. One of my absolute favorite moments of their day was immediately after the ceremony, Drake came up and hugged both Robyn + Andy.  It was an extremely special moment.

Robyn planned the entire wedding herself. She even did her own hair and created her own bouquet! Talk about talented! She chose Heritage Golf Club after seeing photos of it online. She absolutely fell in love with the location, the large oaks, the marina, and the Spanish Moss. Oh, the Spanish Moss! Although it rained in the morning, the skies cleared in time for their outdoor ceremony beneath an oak tree. We couldn't have asked for better weather, and the sunset at the marina was stunning. Robyn, Andy + their guests released wish lanterns from the dock at the end of the evening. Although the wind made it tricky, they were able to successfully launch a few. It was a beautiful sight and onlookers cheered as they took flight.”

Sea Island Wedding {Catherine + Josh}

You know I love when I get to take my ALW faithful for a little day trip down to my home state of Georgia, especially when we make a beeline right for the magical Sea Island.  With Events by Caroline behind the wedding wheel, Catherine + Josh tied the knot in elegant, outdoor ceremony overlooking the water, in what appears to be a Lowcountry afternoon that most gals dream of.  To celebrate, the couple joined their wedding guests for a tented evening under the stars where the gals at Garden on the Square created superbly Southern floral arrangements of hydrangeas and baby’s breath to grace the tabletops.  With a welcoming ocean breeze, Guest relaxed in a lovely outdoor lounge area and dined on a feast of Southern cuisine, including roasted quail, before kicking off their shoes and hopping on the dance floor to enjoy the sounds of The Swinging Medallions.  Thanks to the wonderful Donna Von Bruening for capturing this swoon-worthy Sea Island Wedding!  Oh, and yes, that is a real fish cake!

Reid Barn Wedding {Marcy + Chris}

It's been a minute since we properly celebrated Southern Wedding Sunday, so I figured if we were going to bring it back we really needed to do it with a bang...and Marcy + Chris's Reid Barn wedding is the definition of a bang!  This beauty has made me fall in love for an orange and purple color palette like I never thought I could...partially thanks to Bedazzled Flower Shop for those ah-mazing bouquets.  Designed by Signature Weddings & Events, their rustic details in the North Georgia Mountains are sure to make you get your pin on!  For their intimate ceremony, the aisle was flanked with bare branches and the rafters were draped with whimsical ribbons in shades of blush.  After, guests celebrated the night away with homemade whoopie pies and mason jar filled drinks!  Thanks to Brita Photography for sharing all the beautiful Southern details! southern weddingssouthern weddingsfarm weddingssouthern weddingssouthern weddingssouthern weddingssouthern weddingssouthern weddings

Carolina Yacht Club Wedding {Kate + Nate}

Sometimes it’s a beautiful Lowcountry wedding venue, or an adorable Southern detail, an amazing photographer, a killer florist…I never know what will set our hearts a-flutter!  But there is something about everything single one of the Lowcountry weddings that we post that we just can’t get enough.  And then every once in a while, one comes along that I wish I could have been right in the middle of.  You know, just jump right in the mix and party the night away, because it looked like such a good time!  One of those weddings that people still rave about how much fun it was.  The ones that have guests throwing back drinks, kicking off their shoes and running to the dance floor.  Well, that’s exactly what this Charleston wedding photographed by Riverland Studios was all about! Even though Kate + Nate’s Carolina Yacht Club wedding is stunningly beautiful (and I know you all will go crazy pinning the details), I think the combination of such a sweet couple, their team of truly talented Charleston wedding vendors and a fun-loving guest list in the mood to celebrate, proved to be just what the doctor ordered…a big ol’ Southern wedding bash, Lowcountry-style!  Seriously, some of these bridesmaids dancing are just cracking me up!

Folly Beach Wedding Engagement {Alexandra + Thomas}

We’re so excited to share this lovely Lowcountry wedding engagement from our friends at Sweet Tea Imagery.  The session kicked off with a low-key tour of Downtown Charleston, which for all of us romantics means historic homes, cobblestone and alleyways.  Swoon!  Then the adorable couple, Alexandra + Thomas, headed over to Folly Beach to soak up the sunset, sand and the salty breeze.  We're positive you'll love this Folly Beach wedding engagement!

Wedding Woes: A Bride's Blonde Blunder

This time on Wedding Woes we're sharing one of our bride's biggest "blonde moments" that coincided perfectly with her bridal portraits.  Definitely not the best timing for her, but it's happened to the best of us, right?! Enjoy!

“ For a working bride, weekends are about the only time to get key pre-wedding tasks as well as every day appointments taken care of. With only so many weekends in a month you often find yourself over booked. In my case, I had the bright idea to make an appointment to test out my “wedding hair color” the day before my bridal portraits. Everyone knows you need a couple of days for your highlights to blend in and fade to a natural color. Well, everyone except for me. The day before. Really? WHAT was I thinking!?

Well, I wanted my hair “summertime blonde” for my wintertime wedding and boy did my stylist make it blonde! Half an hour after my appointment I went to pick up my gown for my portraits the next day. As soon as I got to the gown shop and caught a glimpse of myself in the mirror I thought "Oh s***, this is waaayyyyy too blonde!" The staff at the shop saw my concern but they all assured me “it was fiiiineee”.

I drove home immediately afterwards and showered, praying some of the color would wash out.  After blow-drying my hair I just stared at myself in the mirror and started sobbing. I was going to look like My Size Wedding Barbie in my portraits and what if I couldn’t get it back to normal in time for the wedding?!

I frantically drove back to the salon hoping my stylist could work some magic. She (of course) told me it looked great but she could fix it if I really wanted her to. Bridezilla much? I think so. After what seemed like hours of the entire staff at the salon reassuring me it looked good, I finally convinced myself that it was OK and I would come to enjoy the color.

In the end, my bridal portraits turned out fine and my hair was back to normal in time for the wedding. However my bridesmaids did enjoy teasing me about how I managed to keep my hair so sun kissed that late in the fall!”

Brides, we’ll quote Elle Woods on this one for you: “The rules of hair care are simple and finite. Any Cosmo girl would have known.” But just incase you forgot like this Lowcountry bride, here are a few helpful tips to avoid hair-do horror.

  • We know your schedule leading up to the big day is packed, but try to avoid planning appointments that will directly affect the other back to back!
  • For brides who color their hair, it does fade so give yourself a week or two before panicking!
  • Make sure your stylist knows exactly what you want when it comes to both color and style. And if it doesn’t turn out the way you want it, don’t be afraid to say something!

Tell us a little bit about yourself…and by a little, we mean a lot :)

I was born in New York and raised in Maryland, but my heart belongs to South Carolina.  After spending 6+ years in finance, I rediscovered this love for photography and decided to try and fulfill my dream of building my own business + finally doing something I absolutely love for a living.  And wow – 2 years into it, I can finally say I'm living the dream!  I started out specializing in pet photography, which is something I still do + love.  I've always had a special connection with pets, especially dogs, so that was a natural fit for me.  While volunteering at my local animal shelter in Baltimore, I met another photographer who specialized in weddings.  We became good friends through volunteering and so I asked her if I could tag along and help out with some of her weddings.  She said yes and I fell in love with it.  That was in the fall of 2011.  We moved to Charleston in January 2012 and I spent all of 2012 second shooting with some amazing photographers here in Charleston, learning the business + sharpening my technical skills.  After booking pretty much every weekend, I thought to myself "maybe I could do this full-time and quit my day job" (which I hated).  So I gave myself a deadline – by August 1, I would have a website up and I'd start marketing myself.  Well, as luck would have it, I was laid off from my full-time job on July 31 and so I was pushed into life as a full-time photographer.  But it was the best thing that ever happened to me.  Since then, I've been working hard to build my wedding photography business and it's been amazing.  I think back to my life a year ago and still can't believe how much has happened and how incredibly lucky I am to finally be doing something I absolutely love for a living.

I'm married to my best friend, Brian, and we have 3 dogs – two Golden Retrievers named Camden + Brady, and a small lab-pit bull mix named Beckham.  I love to read, travel + eat… but not necessarily in that order.  I love reality TV, Starbucks, and anything that sparkles.

Give us a little background on how your business came to life...

I've always loved photography.  I can remember using my parent's film Minolta when I was young and I just LOVED taking photos of anything… but especially of my pets.  When my parents got me my own camera one year for my birthday, I was in love.  I took a camera with me everywhere and I still have boxes of prints + albums from my childhood.  I just can't bear to get rid of them!  When I bought my first DSLR camera in 2010, something clicked.  I had always loved photography – capturing moments – but the DSLR allowed me to create art.  I loved that!!  So I dove into it, learning how to shoot manually and taking in as much information as possible.  I started my pet photography business in early 2011 and my wedding photography business in August 2012.  It's been an amazing couple of years!

What is the one tip you wish you could tell every bride?

When you're looking for a wedding photographer, make sure whoever you book makes you feel confident and comfortable.  Feeling at ease with your photographer will only enhance your images in the end.

How can a bride come prepared to her first appointment with you?

I love when my brides come to me with ideas.  Although I rely on my own creativity, it's always great when brides are vocal about what inspires them and what exactly they love about my work, so that I can focus on providing them with great images that they will be over-the-moon excited about.  I guess I really like brides who aren't afraid to speak up and let me know what they are really looking for when they hire me.  It helps ensure that we're both on the same page and that we are the right fit for each other.

Favorite wedding image you've ever snapped.

There are so many wonderful images, it's hard to choose just one!  Right now, it's a tie between Becca + Jay's portrait on the beach (below) and Stephanie + Jason's portrait on the beach (first image).  I just love the light in the first one and the cool tree in the second one :)  Both of them are on the homepage of my website.  That's where most of my recent favorites live!

It’s Friday and you just cashed your paycheck….what’s your first splurge?

I'm pretty good at saving money and sticking to my budget, but every once in a while, I have to hit up the J Crew outlet for some new clothes :)

What blogs provide you daily inspiration to keep your creative juices flowing (non-wedding related) ?

I follow a lot of designers on Facebook that keep me inspired – Promise Tangeman, Ravyn Stadick, Jennifer Olmstead.  Most of the blogs I read are wedding related or pet photography related.  I gain my inspiration from real life and things around me.  When I'm out and about, I'm constantly inspired by light, architecture, textures, colors + unique locations.  I am always on the look out and thinking of new things I could bring to my work.

What the most rewarding thing about your line of work?

Being a part of my clients' wedding day is so rewarding.  Becoming friends with them throughout the process is amazing and something I cherish.  Sharing + capturing their joy and their love is indescribable.  I'm so blessed.

If you were a major league baseball player, what would be your ‘at-bat’ song?

Moves Like Jagger by Maroon 5… that song always makes me want to dance!

Must have Lowcountry wedding detail….

Antique furniture rentals (think 428 Main Vintage Rentals… one of my faves) and lush Southern florals… the perfect combo!

Current favorite color palette:

I've always liked a muted color palette – muted greys, blues, greens, etc.  I'm also loving champagne-colored sparkles right now :)

Wedding Woes: A Bridesmaid's Dress Distress

For our first installment of Wedding Woes we’re sharing a reader’s less than functional relationship with every bridesmaid’s worse enemy - her dress. Enjoy!

“From the get-go I had a bad feeling about this particular dress. For starters, it was for a winter wedding and while the dress was gorgeous, I knew the color would completely wash me out that time of the year. On top of that, when I went to have my measurements taken the number written on the order form was TWO SIZES bigger than what I normally wear - and even I sucked in!

Needless to say, my bruised ego and I took our time returning to face the dress again. However when I zipped it up I found myself pleasantly surprised – not only did the dress fit, but it was at least two sizes TOO BIG! The only bad news was, there were only weeks until the wedding and the dress was in desperate need of alterations.

Luckily one of my fellow bridesmaids knew a seamstress who promised I’d have the dress back within days. So I went and got it fitted and as promised I picked it up again with a week to spare. It wasn’t until the day of the wedding that I finally stepped back into the dress. But as I pulled it up it got to a point where it wouldn’t pull up anymore. After a few seconds of complete confusion I realized the bottom of my dress was sewn shut!

I went into total panic mode. I soon realized only the underlay of the dress had been sewn together. After some quick moves with a pair of scissors my dress was functional again. Shortly afterwards I was headed to the church in my dress that was finally flawless. And as for the color – I got a spray tan so Casper didn’t make an appearance while my best friend said ‘I do’!”

While this bridesmaid’s story makes for a good laugh now, we came up with a few ways to avoid a similar state of panic for any of our future bridesmaids:

  • If you really think your measurements are off, say something! They may even have a spare dress you can try on for size.
  • Don’t procrastinate! Pick your dress up as soon as it has arrived and take care of alterations right away.
  • Even the most trusted seamstress can make a mistake. Try the dress on before you take it home to make sure it fits perfectly!

We were in stitches with last week’s submissions so keep them coming to elizabeth@alowcountrywed.com!

DIY Centerpieces

We've got a big week on the horizon at A Lowcountry Wedding!  For starters, we'll be teaming up with a crew of crazy, talented Charleston wedding vendors for a nautical-inspired shoot at the South Carolina Aquarium that is going to knock. your. socks. off.   On Thursday, you'll find us at The NotWedding with some of South Carolina's finest wedding vendors as we treat Lowcountry brides to an evening full of inspiration at the beautiful Rice Mill Building, but in the meantime, Blake is showering you with some easy, yet impactful, do-it-yourself centerpieces.

.

I just love the idea of using vintage bottles as flower centerpieces. You can use different sizes, shapes, and colors. There are so many things you can do with them and they just look so cute!

If you want to add a pop of color you can do it yourself! All you have to do is pour paint on the inside of the vase and swirl around to coat. So easy!
