Charleston Destination Wedding at Wild Dunes Resort

OK Florist stole the show when designing the blooms for this killer Wild Dunes wedding,  Bride Amber selected an eye-catching palette of coral and turquoise, perfect for a bash on the beach, to highlight their coastal ceremony.  The couple envisioned a Charleston destination wedding that brought their loved ones together for a spiritual experience and that’s just what they got.  Amber wore a beautiful lace gown with a timeless train.  Her hair was effortlessly swept back by the team at Vanity Salon and she carried a luscious bouquet of of flowers.   The Father-of-the-Bride built a stunning wooden cross to serve as the focal point for their Oceanside nuptials that Ok Florist adorned with coral charm peonies, beautiful roses and astible.   After saying ‘I do’, the newlyweds made their way to the Dunes for some intimate time alone before celebrating the night away with their friends and family.  Thanks to Richard Bell Photography for capturing all the details! Folly Beach Wedding {Lauren + John}

If you call the Lowcountry home, then I'm sure you were in heaven this weekend with this beautiful weather we had.  It was so lovely that plenty of people grabbed their towels and sunscreen and headed straight to the beach!  In honor of the pretty skies, I thought we could get Monday crackin' with this beautiful Folly Beach wedding from Red Fly Studios.  These two Bostonians met at a Easter Sunday barbecue where almost everyone there was Irish (including John!) and Lauren had a hard time following conversions, but John was patient with her as the two chatted about their dogs and Lauren was immediately smitten with the kindhearted Irishman and soon the two became inseparable.  While planning their coastal Charleston wedding, the couple quickly selected a rental house on the beach to house their outdoor ceremony and lively reception under the stars.  Aren't you diggin' Lauren's amazing bouquet? charleston weddings, hilton head weddings, myrtle beach weddings

Marion's in the French Quarter {Meaghan + Loyd}

I love when two of my favorite vendors, Chancey Charm Weddings and Carolina Studios by Gillian Reinhardt, team up for a Charleston wedding, and this bad boy is bound to knock your socks off!  Meaghan + Loyd said ‘I do’ in a beautiful, traditional ceremony in the heart of the Holy City at the majestic Cathedral of St. John’s the Baptist.   After tying the knot, they headed over (via carriage ride, of course!) to Marion’s in the French Quarter where they celebrated the evening away with family and friends!  The entire black and yellow affair was dressed in white hydrangeas, sunflowers and sweet grasses roses for that added Lowcountry touch.  To top off the perfect day, the couple rode off rickshaw-style down East Bay Street!

The Makings of a Perfect Wedding Day {Rick Dean Photography}

We always love to have our favorite Charleston wedding vendors swing by to share their insight on a particular topic, and I'm thrilled to have the talented Rick Dean Photography joining us today!  Rick's experience as a professional photographer has given him an interesting viewpoint on accomplishing the perfect photographic wedding day...

The Makings of a Perfect Wedding Day

Observations from a Photographer’s Point of View

In the course of the 13+ years and hundreds of weddings that I have photographed, I have seen all sizes, types and styles of weddings, from the simple and understated to the elaborate and eye-popping.  They were all truly amazing events because they were the vision of the bride (and some grooms), something that has been dreamed of for years and years.  Fortunately for the clients that I have worked with, I have never witnessed a wedding disaster.  But, I have seen my share of “oops” that could have or did make for an anxious bride or at best, a lot of laughs!  So I write this post to share with you some of my observations, from the photographer’s point of view --the person that is on a constant state of alert, observing every moment of the event.  I will cover topics that have recurring themes:  professionalism, timing, and communication-- from the wedding planner, the hair stylist, and of course, the photographer.

charleston weddings

Observation #1:  Choosing the right photographer with the proper skills and experience is critically important.  Yes, I know this may sound a bit biased, but I think your photography is the most important aspect of your wedding.  Also biased, but, think about it:  you spend months, maybe longer, planning this most magical day of your life and at the end of the day when the music has stopped, the cake is eaten, and the last toast has been made, all you may have to help you remember your wedding day are your photographs.

charleston beach weddings

At every wedding I shoot, I hear horror stories from the guests who are attending the wedding about their wedding photography.  At a recent event, as I was packing up for the evening, a young woman walked up to me and said, “… (bride) is going to be so happy with her wedding pictures, I just know it.  You were everywhere you needed to be.  I could tell you covered every detail.  When I got married I hired a friend to do my photography because she said she knew what she was doing and promised to do a good job.  There are so many things that she missed, pictures of really important parts of our wedding day that were not captured.  She had no idea how to pose us for our portraits. I still cry when I look at my pictures.”  I recently heard of a wedding where the inexperienced photographer had to borrow a guest’s camera when her one and only camera stopped working during the ceremony.  Another guest told me about her “friend photographer” -- she showed up with just one camera and a small flash.  The camera was so basic it was not capable of shooting in dark rooms with low light so all of the reception pictures were dark, pixilated and out of focus.  While I am sure there are many good experiences that I do not hear about, but please consider this:  Uncle Bob, or your college roommate, or the husband of your sister’s best friend may sound like a great way to save some money, but there are several pitfalls to consider.  Will your friend or relative also be a guest at the wedding?  Will their focus be on you (the client) or on having a good time?  Do they have the knowledge to make you look your best?  Do they know how to use posing techniques that will make your pictures look “not posed”?  Do they have professional quality camera and lighting equipment to shoot a wedding that may be both indoors and out, from rooms that are very dark to being under the noon-day sun with severe shadows?  Most importantly, do they know what needs to be done when their equipment fails or how to work under very stressful conditions so they can capture those “once in a lifetime moments”?  These last two questions go hand in hand because equipment failures can happen to anyone, even a pro.  It is how your photographer handles the situation that sets a professional apart from a personal friend or family member.  My suggestion is to do your homework when evaluating potential photographers.  Hire an experienced professional and ask them how they would handle any or all of the situations I described.  Their answers will be the best way to gauge their competence and their ability to provide you the best pictures of your most important day.

charleston wedding venues

Observation #2:  Developing a detailed and comprehensive timeline of events will make your day less stressful and your wedding support team more successful.   Your timeline should detail all of the various wedding day activities from beginning to end, chronologically throughout the day.  It should contain the name and contact information of all of your vendors.   You will want to make sure your timeline includes the start and end time and delivery and pick up times of all of your vendors.  Common scheduling mistakes include the actual time needed to lace up the wedding gown and ample time to travel from the ceremony to the reception venue. I have seen gowns that take only one minute to get into, and I have also seen those that take twenty-five minutes.  Your timeline should include having your photographer arrive two hours before the ceremony to ensure they have ample time to capture the important pre-wedding images you desire, including the bride’s “getting ready images” and any pre-ceremony group shots with the guys and the gals and other intimate moments before the ceremony.  Remember that 30 minutes before the ceremony, the groomsmen will be seating guests and your bridesmaids assisting you in those final preparations, so that may limit the photographic possibilities if you cut short when your photographer begins the day.  And remember, your exit is as important as your entrance so please detail your departure plans to make sure your photographer is still present to capture the end of your day.  It is important to include every detail imaginable in this very important planning tool and to distribute your timeline to all your vendors at least 10 days before your wedding day.  This way any scheduling issues or overlaps can be identified and remedied averting potential wedding day ‘disasters’.   And finally, you will want someone to be in charge of executing the timeline for you on your wedding day.  Timelines and their pitfalls are easily taken care of by hiring a professional planner/coordinator.  Which brings me to, ….

wedding blogs

rick dean photography

Observation #3:  Choose a professional wedding or event coordinator.  Whether you desire full service event planning/coordination or strictly “day of” coordination, using a professional, experienced wedding planner, is the best way to make sure your day is managed exactly how you imagined it.  Once again, please be careful if a family member or friend offers to manage the events of your day.  She may also be a guest at the wedding and if so, may find it difficult to coordinate your day and simultaneously, enjoy it with you.  Some clients also find their coordinator through their caterer or venue as a value-added part of their service.  I have seen this option create amazing weddings that are flawlessly executed but I’ve also witnessed the planner that has “flown the coop” once the cake has been cut.  If you choose the value-add approach, here are some things to consider:  Make sure that you have a dedicated person from the staff that will be with you from the beginning of your day to the moment you are driven away.  They should not be the person that gets pulled away to spearhead a food or venue crisis.  As your planner, she should take the issue to the person in charge (chef or building manager) so that she can get back to her other duties as the event coordinator, and most importantly, helping you.  Something as simple as not having enough staff on hand to open both of the church’s double doors as you start your walk down the aisle or moving your guests to your exit location when the “partying” is over, is the job of a good wedding planner.  A professional event coordinator will make sure every detail is managed – from the start of your day to your formal exit ensuring the end of your day is as important as the beginning.

Observation #4:  Communicate, communicate, and communicate.  This may sound simple but it is second only to your timeline.  Ask almost any wedding planner or photographer and they will agree that hair and make-up takes longer than is usually planned, especially when you have a large wedding party.  The key to success is communication.  When scheduling your stylist and make-up artist, in addition to telling them the start time of your ceremony, you also should communicate the exact time they must have everyone coiffed, beautiful and ready to go.  Just to be safe, you may want to add an extra half hour into this part of your timeline and communicate to your hair stylist and make-up artist how important staying on schedule is to the success of your day.

rick dean photography

charleston wedding blogs

I started with photography and so I’ll end with photography.  Most of my weddings include a staff of three (a primary photographer, a second photographer and an assistant) for the critical portions of the day.  There are times when your photographer needs to be in two places at one time.  For example, a wedding with lots of reception details that must be shot before the event begins may overlap with the time needed to capture the bride’s “getting ready” images or the groom and groomsmen preparations at an off-site location.  And let’s not forget during the ceremony when your photographer’s ability to move around is limited by space or church rules. A “second shooter” covers other angles of moments that can not be repeated from the first kiss to the last dance, every moment is important and capturing them all will make for lasting memories.

Every bride wants her wedding day to be a reflection of her happiness and joy.  Choosing the right team of professionals is the first step to ensure this happens.  Her wedding support team will make sure her day is as wonderful as she imagines it to be, and will ensure the she and her new husband are able to enjoy their wedding day without worry.   From the ‘eye’ of the photographer, I hope that you found my observations informative and more importantly, useful as you plan your wedding day.

Cypress Tree Plantation {Roxana + Joshua}

You know I love me some cotton.  Actually this week has been full of fun cotton details, remember Erin's Charleston wedding at Boone Hall Plantation?!  It was chock full of cotton and burlap loveliness!  Well today we've got another cotton beauty to share with you and this one has quite the tale to go with it.   Roxana + Joshua married in the Lowcountry this past fall on the enchanting Edisto Island at Cypress Trees Plantation.  But that's not all.  With friends and family literally all across the globe, the couple decided it was necessary to have two separate celebrations, not just one Edisto Island but also Lima, Peru!  But the REAL kicker...they planned both destination weddings from Angola and from the looks of it, they went off without a hitch!  Thanks to Josh for filling us in on how they managed to pull off their whirlwind, International wedding celebrations! charleston weddings destination

"A project management challenge, that's the way I would sum it up!  I joked with Roxana during the lead up to the wedding that we should add a line on project management to our resumes but that it might not be well relieved by potential employers.
Practically though, our families helped out a tremendous amount doing scouting runs for us and providing various levels of support. We did a lot of research online and then spent a years worth of vacation traveling to the US and Peru from Angola to visit venues, interview vendors and got all the major details underway.  From that point on, once we had the major contractors secured we just kept ourselves organized through spreadsheets and notebooks and lists.  We didn't go into the millions of details that are possible to get so wrapped up in and bogged down by, we tried to keep ourselves sane by keeping the details right, but at the right level also.
Roxana headed to Peru two and a half weeks prior to the wedding there and we were in the US about 10 days before the wedding at Edisto.  Last minute arrangements were done once we got on site.  My folks and family were a tremendous help in the US organizing and pulling together most of the materials that we were not able to sort out during our previous trips.  Then we just went and made it happen.
The happiest thing of all is that we were able to stay relatively sane throughout both and actually enjoy them!  It would have been easy to get too carried away but somehow we managed to really have a lot of run and roll with the punches that came.  I think all in all what it came down to for us was supportive families who helped a lot and good organization on our side that came together to make both events a success."

Gown Boutique of Charleston {Bridal Fabrics}

Hey Gals! We've got yet another wonderful treat from our favorite crew at Gown Boutique of Charleston.  In case you've missed the past few times they've swung by, make sure to check out their truly informative posts on how to 'Be a Prepared Bride' and 'Ordering A Gown - How Long Does it Really Take?'  But today, we're talking all about the fabrics, so we'll leave it to the experts to break it down for us... charleston weddings

You’re engaged!  Congratulations!  Is your head spinning yet?  For many of you newly engaged brides, there is a lot of information to take in as you start to plan your wedding.  Some of you are so excited that you rush to the bridal shop the minute that ring lands on your finger!  That’s not a bad thing, but often times you can be unsure of the kind of dress you are looking for when you first start shopping.

gown boutique of charleston

Once the bridal consultant starts putting you in dresses and throwing out all kinds of terms for fabrics & silhouettes, it can be overwhelming.  I thought it might help to give you a crash course on some of the most popular bridal fabrics.  Reading up on your gown terminology can help ease the learning curve just a bit, and help you select the gown best suited for your taste and wedding style.

Let’s clear one thing up first…what is silk?

One term I see thrown about loosely is “silk”.  Many brides say they want a silk gown, or ask if a gown is made of silk.  Well, some gowns are silk, but that is only part of the story.  Silk is a type of fabric that has many different forms: silk satin, silk taffeta, silk dupioni, silk chiffon, etc.  The fabric types I outline below can be made of either silk or a poly blend fabric.  These terms listed below refer to the appearance of the fabric, not the actual fibers that make up the fabric.  For example, you can have silk satin or poly satin.  A full silk satin will be higher in price because it is a higher quality fabric.  On the other hand, a poly satin gives you the look of satin at a much more affordable price.

Satin

gown boutique of charleston

Satin (sometimes called Duchess Satin) is the most formal bridal material, and it is also the heaviest weight.  This fabric is soft & supple to the touch with a high sheen that “bounces” the light off the fabric, which helps give that bridal “glow” people so often talk about.  After not seeing much satin for several years, it is starting to make a comeback.  We may see the trends start to swing towards the more formal looks for a while.

Charmeuse

dupioni

Charmeuse gives the high sheen of satin without all the weight.  It drapes nicely, tends to hug your figure, and often gives that old Hollywood vibe.

Taffeta

charleston weddings

Taffeta is a popular bridal fabric that has some sheen along with a slight texture to the touch.  This fabric is light weight with great body to it, making it a great choice for styles that bridge the gap between formal & comfortable.  Taffeta is a popular fabric not only for wedding gowns, but also for bridesmaids & mothers.

Chiffon

wedding blogs

Chiffon is a sheer, very soft fabric that drapes well.  Chiffon is often used for that Grecian goddess look, which works well with a beach, destination, or outdoor wedding.  This fabric is one of the lightest in weight and tends to have a less formal feel overall, however the silhouette shape & the accessories can dress it up or down.

Organza

lowcountry weddings

Organza is another very light weight fabric.  It is as light as Chiffon, but has more body to it.  We love this fabric on ballgown silhouettes because it gives you a full, flowing look without weighing you down.  It is also great for creating ruffles or floral details on gowns.

Tulle/Netting

charleston wedding vendors

Tulle is a sheer “netted” fabric is also used to make veils.  It has a more casual in feel and is very light weight.  It is a great way to give a gown texture without doing flowers or ruffles.

Dupioni/Shantung

wedding dress fabrics

southern weddings

Both Dupioni and Shantung are types of “raw” silk that are known for their “slubbing” or lined texture that runs throughout the fabric.  Most often, Dupioni will show more “slubs” than Shantung.  I am showing examples in color here so that the texture variation will show well.  We see this fabric used in bridal gowns, bridesmaids & mother’s dresses.  This fabric is versatile and very comfortable to wear, and is a great option for keeping some sheen, but also getting some texture.

Lace

There are many kinds of lace, but the two most popular types of bridal lace are Chantilly Lace and Alencon Lace.  You can see different patterns of Chantilly or Alencon lace, but most bridal gowns made of lace will fall into one of those 2 lace styles.

Chantilly Lace

charleston wedding blogs

Chantilly lace is a handmade bobbin lace that is named for the city of Chantilly, France.  Bobbin lace is made by braiding and twisting lengths of thread that are wound on bobbins to manage them.  This lace has a delicate feel.  It is known for natural looking floral or scrolled design, and its pattern is outlined in a flat, untwisted strand.

Alencon Lace

myrtle beach weddings

Alencon lace is a needlepoint lace with a floral design that is sewn on a sheer net background.  It is characterized by a heavy thread outlining the design. This lace originated in Alencon, France, and “needlepoint” lace means it is a type of lace created using a needle and thread to stitch up hundreds of small stitches to form the lace itself.  In its purest form the only equipment and materials used are a needle, thread and scissors.

Well, there you have it!  You are now a bridal fabric expert!  I hope that these terms will help you sift through the racks of gowns in your search for the perfect gown.  I know you will at least impress a bridal consultant or two by throwing out words from your new bridal vocabulary.

Happy shopping!

I'm wrapping up this week and heading into February the only way I know how...with a big, dreamy Lowcountry wedding!  This Charleston beauty took place on Mount Pleasant at the charming Alhambra Hall where Jenna + Michael tied the knot in a outdoor ceremony.   After, the newlyweds took a stroll with the talented Sally Watts Photography to capture a few breathtaking moments by the water.  Thanks to our friend, and ALW vendor, Pure Luxe Bride for coordinating this one-of-a-kind Southern affair! charleston weddingssouthern wedding blogsmyrtle beach wedding blogshilton head weddingswedding blogslowcountry weddings-dave landeo bandmyrtle beach wedding venues

Wild Dunes Wedding {Beth + Jeff}

Thanks to this crazy, springlike weather, we've all had a hankerin' to hightail it straight to the beach!  So, what better way to spend our Wedding Wednesday with a dreamy, Wild Dunes Wedding that will have you dying to stick your toes in the sand.  Beth + Jeff tied the knot this past September in the perfect coastal affair.  Luckily, our friends at Richard Bell Photography were on hand to document every single moment.  Their blue and white color palette couldn't have been better suited for the beach.  Don't you just love that bouquet? charleston weddingscharleston wedding venuescharleston wedding vendorscharleston wedding blogscharleston wedding photographyhilton head wedding vendorscoastal weddings

Charleston Engagement {Tim + Rachel}

We're headed into what is sure to be a fabulous, January weekend.  I mean, we're talking 75 degrees and sunny!  Is it springtime already!?!  So, in honor of this beautiful weather, I thought a gorgeous Charleston engagement from our pal Britt Croft Photography would be the perfect way to get the celebration started.  Tim + Rachel started things off dressed in the Steelers Save the Dates at the beach with their adorable, four-legged friend Bella before heading downtown to enjoy the historic Holy City! charleston weddingscharleston wedding blogscharleston wedding vendorscharleston wedding blogcharleston wedding venuesweddings in charlestonbritt croft photographyhilton head weddingshilton head wedding vendorsmyrtle beach wedding vendorslowcountry weddingsmyrtle beach weddingswedding blogssouth carolina weddingssouthern weddingscharleston wedding photographycharleston wedding photographers

Charleston Engagement {Aimee + Aaron}

Oh, my word!  Thank you, thank you, thank you Valerie Schooling for this oh-so-heavenly Charleston engagement session.  For Part One, Aaron donned his military attire while the beautiful Miss Aimee dazzled in a vintage-inspired dress.  How romantic!  Later in the day, the couple changed into more casual attire as they gallivanted around the railroad tracks.  Isn't that natural light to die for?!
